What is obesity?
Obesity is a complicated medical condition in which excess fat accumulates to the point that it can have a negative impact on a person’s health and life expectancy. Obesity is normally measured using the BMI (Body Mass Index) method and is a measurement of height versus weight. There are known limitations with the BMI method but it is the most reliable indicator so far. To determine your BMI use the calculator on our website.
Bariatric Surgery key points:
- Weight loss surgery offers the best long-term results for the treatment of obesity
- The majority of procedures are able to be performed as minimal access surgery (keyhole surgery)
- After surgery, weight-related health problems such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea and arthritis may improve, and in many cases, resolve completely
- The best outcomes following surgery can be achieved by having regular follow up with a multidisciplinary team for support
- In some cases, an operation may be undertaken using the da Vinci Xi Surgical System. You can find out more information regarding Robotic Surgery here
